Ollerton travelled to North Kesteven for the
first league game of the new season and although dominating in the
forwards and scoring three tries to two, the spoils went to the home
side in another highly contested game with North Kesteven running out
eventual winners 17-15.
Ollerton got off to a great start when their
scrum half, Clive Ford managed to tackle his opposite number at the
back of a North Kesteven 5 metre scrum and ground the loose ball for a
fine opportunist try. 0-5
Both sides failed to add to the score board
until a superb kick into space by outside centre Simon Hayward split
the North Kesteven defence to allow winger Eric Cranmer to pluck the
ball out of the air on the first bounce to score a well deserved try.
0-10
North Kesteven‘s reply was instant as
Ollerton gave away a penalty right in front of their posts bringing
the score to 3-10 on the half hour mark. The remainder of the first
half was very tight with the Ollerton forwards applying the pressure
but being unable to turn the pressure into points thanks to some good
North Kesteven defending.
The second half started with Ollerton on the
attack only for an interception to gift a try to North Kesteven’s
number thirteen with only three minutes of the second half played. All
level 10-10
The second half saw even more pressure from the Ollerton forwards that
resulted in both number 8, Mark Laughton and Prop Richard Soar being
held up over the try line.
Full back, Fat Boy Dymyd" who used to race clear of our own 22 on
30 metre plus mazy runs, had some hearts fluttering and sphincters
twitching at the 50 minute mark when he decided to run the ball out of
Ollerton's 22 in a sidweways direction, just managing to kick the ball
into touch before being creamed by the opposition.
Ollerton lost their pack leader "Wally" to a nasty clash of
heads with fellow front rower, Wayne. It wasn't all doom and gloom
though as our very own Physio/water carrier/nurse, Jo Hayward dashed
on to help, dropped a water bottle in full flow, stood on it and went
arse over tit to the delight of both teams (Sorry Jo)
With fifteen minutes remaining, North Kesteven took the lead for the
first time thanks to Ollerton’s indecision in clearing their lines
when the ball was in their in goal area, resulting in the North
Kesteven scrum half diving on the loose ball to make the score 17-10.
The last 5 minutes of the game saw Ollerton
camped in the North Kesteven half and were rewarded when the ball was
shipped wide for winger Cranmer to claim his brace and Ollerton’s
third try.
17-15.
There was just about time for a restart but not enough time for
Ollerton as the referee bought yet another close encounter between
these two sides to a close.
