Match Report: 12th March 2005

First team: North Derbyshire 108 vs 18 Ollerton

Ollerton travelled to North Derbyshire for what always going to be a nigh on impossible mission. Selection was thrown in to disarray due to late unavailability and work commitments. Ollerton kept their heads held high throughout the match despite going down by 108 points to 18.

Ollerton started the brighter holding their own, even taking the lead through a Kevin Cogan long distance penalty. North Derbyshire then stepped up a gear and began their back lead onslaught. Simple ball in hand tactics and some excellent angled running allowed both wingers to score 5 and 4 tries respectively with the former taking his seasons tally to 46! There were two bright moments for Ollerton both involving make shift outside centre Matt Abdy. The first came from an intercepted pass where he managed to come with in 5 meters of the try line, with support from Fred Ford, Eric Cranmer was on hand to touch down in the corner, Kevin Cogan converting. The second came from a scrum where number 8 Mark Laughton picked up and fed fly half Chris Ford who released Steve Hallam to burst through the defense who inturn set up Abdy for a score in the corner. Inbetween tries Chris Ford scored a drop goal taking Ollerton’s final tally to 18. The result was never going to be in doubt leaving Ollerton with 3 games in which to save their season.
Second Team: Ollerton 2nds 5 vs 61 Matlock 2nds

This game was on paper going to be as hard as the first teams trip to North Derbyshire. The game started slowly until the fifteenth minute which saw a mistake by Ollerton’s defense that allowed Matlock to get the ball rolling. They were a highly organised and experienced outfit which Ollerton couldn’t quite match. Ollerton managed a consolidation try through winger Dave Harrison after a text book move saw the ball secured by the forwards and shipped down the line. With plenty to do Harrison handed off one man and
was able to ground the ball in the corner after a 30 meter run. Next week sees a league game against Ashfields.
Third Team: Ollerton 7 vs 11 Southwell 3rds

Ollerton’s third team were involved in the most competitive match of the day narrowly going down 11-7 to a good Southwell 3rd team. Southwell went in at half time 11-0 up with a try and 2 penalties. Ollerton came out in the second half and immediately pulled the score back to 11-7 with a chip and chase try from fly half Stuart Godfrey which he converted himself. Ollerton pressed for the win but good Southwell defense held firm. Man of the match went to Kris Matthews who had a great game playing open side flanker.
